Pokémon Go – the fitness phenomenon

Pokémon GO, the augmented reality mobile game from Niantic Inc. and Nintendo, has made many eager Pokémon masters step up their fitness levels.

According to fitness tracker Jawbone UP, users of both their fitness band and Pokémon Go logged a staggering 62.5 percent more steps this weekend, compared to their normal average on weekends.

The mobile app, which has taken the digital world by storm, uses the phone’s GPS and clock to detect your location, making Pokémon "appear" around you (meaning: on your phone screen). All that's left to do is for you to catch them.

The app is a true Trojan horse when it comes to fitness, with Pokestops and Gyms spread around the country, requiring you to walk to. To incubate Pokemon Eggs you also need to physically walk around a certain amount of kilometres.

Since its launch in the US and Australia (and unofficial in the UK), Twitter has been flooded with tales of exhausted gamers with sore legs, who are determined to “catch ‘em all!”
